College Essay Writing Workshop
STARS is excited to announce a College Admissions Essay Workshop this summer for rising high school seniors. Summer provides the perfect opportunity for this important work since students have more time, energy, and brain capacity than they do during the school year. During this workshop, students will work on crafting their personal essay for the Common Application or for colleges that utilize their own applications.
Students can come to the first workshop session without any specific plans or ideas and will use a writing process that facilitates original and organic thinking. They’ll start by reading advice from a variety of college admissions professionals. Following discussion of this advice, students will complete freewriting and brainstorming exercises. They’ll read essays that are considered “model” essays and discuss the qualities of a “good” essay and how it aligns with the experts' advice discussed previously. Students’ free-writing exercise will identify an idea that will serve as a starting place for a rough draft. The rough draft will then be revised considering grammar, word choice and word count. With the rough draft underway, prompts for the supplemental essays, which have a more direct approach, will be discussed.
